EAN-13 barcode questions
A weighted mod-10 checksum across the first 12 digits. This generator calculates it for you — enter 12 digits and the 13th, correct check digit gets appended automatically.
UPC-A is a 12-digit North American standard; EAN-13 is its 13-digit international counterpart. A UPC-A number is actually just an EAN-13 with a leading zero, which is why most modern scanners read both without any configuration.
This generator produces a mathematically correct, scannable EAN-13 barcode from any number you provide — but it doesn't issue official, registered GTIN product identifiers. For retail sale through a real distribution channel, you need a number issued by GS1. See the Disclaimer for the full distinction.
That's the check digit being calculated and appended automatically. Enter the full 13 digits yourself if you already have a specific check digit in mind — the generator will verify it's correct rather than silently overriding it.
There are two different things people mean by this. To generate the barcode image itself, this tool does it free from any 12 or 13-digit number. To get an official, industry-recognized EAN-13 number for a real retail product, you need a GTIN issued by GS1 — this generator encodes a number, it doesn't issue one.
Practically, yes — a UPC-A number is just an EAN-13 with a leading zero, and the two encode and scan the same way. Most modern point-of-sale scanners read both without any configuration.
Generating the barcode image itself is free with this tool. What isn't free is an official GTIN number for retail sale — GS1 charges a fee to issue a company prefix, and the amount varies by country and company size. Check with your local GS1 office for current pricing.
