FAQ
EAN-8 barcode questions
7 or 8 — enter 7 and the check digit is calculated for you, or enter the full 8 and it gets verified against the GS1 mod-10 algorithm, the same one EAN-13 and UPC-A use.
EAN-8 is a compact version of EAN-13 for packaging too small for the full 13-digit code — same checksum logic, just a shorter number. It's assigned by GS1 specifically when a product's packaging can't fit EAN-13.
Technically the barcode will encode any 7 or 8 digits you give it, but official EAN-8 numbers are issued by GS1 for products that genuinely need the smaller format — check with GS1 if you need an officially registered number rather than encoding one you already have.
Only digits — like EAN-13 and UPC-A, EAN-8 is strictly numeric. If you need to encode letters or symbols, Code 128 or Code 39 are the better fit.
