UPC-E barcode generator
Small product packaging in North America where a full UPC-A barcode doesn't fit — the same problem EAN-8 solves in EAN/UPC markets outside the US.
Character set
6 digits (compressed) or 8 digits, expanding to a full 12-digit UPC-A number
Typical use
Small product packaging in North America where a full UPC-A barcode doesn't fit — the same problem EAN-8 solves in EAN/UPC markets outside the US.
How it compares
UPC-E isn't a separate numbering scheme — it's a compressed encoding of a UPC-A number with trailing zeros suppressed, so every valid UPC-E code corresponds to exactly one UPC-A number.

Try the bulk generator →How to generate a UPC-E barcode
- Select UPC-E from the format dropdown
- Enter your 6-digit compressed number, or the full 8 digits if you already have the number-system and check digits
- Double-check the encoded value against what you expect — UPC-E's compression logic is pickier than a straightforward format like UPC-A
- Download the PNG, and run a real scan test before committing to a large print run
Common UPC-E use cases
- Small product packaging in the US/Canada where full UPC-A doesn't fit
- Compressing an existing UPC-A number for a smaller label
- Verifying a UPC-E code against its expanded UPC-A equivalent before print
- Prototyping compact retail packaging layouts

FAQ
UPC-E barcode questions
6 digits for the compressed form (a check digit isn't needed — it's calculated from the expanded UPC-A number), or a full 8 digits starting with 0 or 1 if you already have the complete code.
UPC-E is a compressed version of UPC-A for small packaging — it suppresses the zeros in specific UPC-A number patterns to fit the code in less space. Every UPC-E code expands back to exactly one 12-digit UPC-A number.
UPC-E is widely supported by modern retail scanners, but because compression rules are pickier than UPC-A's straightforward layout, we'd recommend a real scan test with your actual scanning hardware before a high-volume print run — the same advice we'd give for any barcode going into a production label run.
No — only UPC-A numbers that fit UPC-E's zero-suppression patterns can compress. If your UPC-A number doesn't fit one of those patterns, generate it as UPC-A directly instead of forcing an incompatible UPC-E.
