12 numeric digits, including a calculated check digit
Typical use
Retail products sold in the United States and Canada — the barcode most point-of-sale systems expect at checkout.
How it compares
UPC-A is the North American counterpart to EAN-13; official GS1 product numbers still need to be issued by GS1, not generated here.

FAQ
UPC-A barcode questions
12 total: 11 digits you provide plus a calculated check digit. Enter 12 digits yourself and the generator verifies your check digit is correct instead of just trusting it.
UPC-A is functionally a 12-digit subset of EAN-13 — an EAN-13 number with a leading zero decodes to the same value. Most point-of-sale scanners handle both without any configuration.
No — you can generate a barcode from any 11 or 12-digit number to see how it looks and confirm it scans correctly. But for it to function as a real, industry-recognized retail product identifier, the number itself needs to be officially issued by GS1. This generator encodes the number you give it; it doesn't issue or register one.
Either the length is wrong (needs 11 or 12 digits) or, if you entered all 12, the check digit doesn't match what the other 11 calculate to — the error message tells you the expected value.
